Google has introduced a long-awaited update that allows users to change or rename their Gmail email address without creating a new account. This feature applies to personal @gmail.com accounts and is being rolled out gradually to users worldwide.
The update makes it easier for users to update outdated or unprofessional email IDs while keeping all existing data intact.
What Is the Gmail Address Rename Feature?
The Gmail account rename feature lets users modify the username part of their Gmail address (the text before “@gmail.com”) directly from their Google Account settings. Previously, changing a Gmail address required creating a new account and manually migrating emails, files, and contacts.
With this update, users can rename their Gmail address while continuing to use the same Google account.
Key Features of Gmail Email Address Change
- No data loss: All emails, contacts, Google Drive files, Photos, and account settings remain unchanged.
- Old email remains active: The previous Gmail address becomes an alias, so emails sent to it still reach the same inbox.
- Multiple sign-in options: Users can log in using either the old or new Gmail address.
- Account security preserved: The old email address stays permanently linked to the account and cannot be reused by others.
Gmail Rename Limits and Restrictions
Google has introduced certain usage limits for this feature:
- Gmail address can be changed once every 12 months
- A maximum of three changes per account
- Available only for personal Gmail accounts
- Not supported for Google Workspace (business) accounts
Rollout Status and Availability
The Gmail rename option is being released in phases and may not yet be visible to all users. Early indications suggest the rollout has begun in selected regions, including India, before expanding globally.
Users will automatically see the option in their Google Account settings once it becomes available.
Why the Gmail Rename Update Is Important
Many users created their Gmail addresses years ago and now need a more professional or updated email ID. This feature eliminates the need for account migration and reduces the risk of missing important emails.
It is considered one of the most significant Gmail updates in recent years.
How to Check If Gmail Rename Is Available
Users can check availability by visiting their Google Account settings and navigating to email or account preferences. If the feature is enabled, the option to rename the Gmail address will appear automatically.
